When I was asked to write a eulogy on my colleague and friend Mark Hogan, I
was hesitant to comply with the request. Mark himself was adverse to praise. He
always felt that if one were asked to complete a task he or she should do it to the
best of his or her ability and not expect any plaudits. A sense of achievement
was the best reward.
Mark started teaching in Ennistymon CBS in September 1970 and was loved by
both pupils and teachers alike. I started there as a student in September 1971
and Mark taught me English and Latin. He later added Geography to this list.
Who will ever forget his wonderful appraisal of the Latin syllabus with his
expression of 'mensa, mensa, me arse!'
Mark had a wonderful warm wit and if he had to write a line on his passing
you could imagine him saying the following: 'It pains me to admit it, but
apparently, I have have passed away' or once again I didn't get things my way.'
So...I was born; I blinked; and it was over. No buildings named after me; no
monuments erected in my honour, no statue erected outside Ennistymon CBS.
They even took my photo off the wall. His favourite quote was 'I was sick and
ye didn't believe me'
Mark had often taught Shakespeare's Othello in class and he would have been
very familiar with the following quote and now 'Sparky' we can apply that
same quote to your good self 'I have done the state some service and they know
it. No more of that'
All his past pupils, friends and colleagues will miss his wit, poetic works, kind
nature, meticulous organised ways, being a snappy dresser with a lingering
waft of aftershave and all these qualities peppered with great charisma and
charm.
To his wife Anne, daughter Julieanne, son Leo and his grandchildren Molly
and Jack we offer you our sincere condolences.
All those exam papers, all those deadlines, all those classes and now you have
reached the final deadline. Rest easy kind friend, you may be gone but you will
never be forgotten. We are all the poorer for your passing. 'Requiescat in Pace'

CBS Ennistymon under 19 basketball team are on a winning strike having beaten Glanmire on their home court before the mid term break. On Friday last our under 19 basketball team had a wonderful day of the court against a very strong opposition Athenry and came out of top with a large margin at the final whistle. Each and every player had a part to play and the cooperation courage skill and determination was visible on and off the court. Even when a key player Liam Cosgrove went over on his ankle after scoring 4 baskets and rebounding numerous balls, the players worked together to get a win. They were dealt another blow when Conor Dillon had to leave the court who was causing chaos for the other team and went to the free throw line and scored over 12 points. Calum Burke and Conor Dillon had many steals and turned the ball over which lead to more scores on the board for cbs.
While James Leigh who was selected on the u17 Regional West team, displayed his skills as to why he was chosen, by scoring 28 points, three 3 pointers, and some from the free throw line.
Ross Clair had a Magnificant game, numerous rebounds, scoring 20 points and strong on defence. Calum Burke and corran breathnach added more points to the score sheet. Ronan O'Connell, Keenan Sexton and Darragh Cudihy played an important part taking down rebounds and moving the ball up the court quick to add to the score board. Some of the under 16 team, James Clair, Cathal O'Brien, Cillian Devitt, Gavin Cosgrove and Shane Vaughan, played a vital role in the game and the success of the team. The final score was 70 - 47, the victory to CBS Ennistymon. All delighted with yet another victory in this league game. The next league game will be played in NUIG on Wednesday 18th November. This week we have a huge event occurring in the local community hall, yet again another All Ireland Quarter Final will be hosted by CBS Ennistymon. Castleisland are travelling up to Ennistymon on Tuesday next 10th November to play our winning under 19 basketball team. Game starts at 11 o'clock so all are welcome to show their support for the local lads who are in the top eight basketball teams in the country and hopefully after Tuesday they will be in the top 4 teams of the country. Many of this team are following in their older brothers footsteps, James Leigh, Cillian Devitt and Darragh Cuddihy who have worn the CBS Ennistymon basketball Jersey with pride in previous all Ireland finals in past years and have All Ireland medals. Here's looking forward to Tuesday game and it is onwards and upwards for this excellent, committed, dedicated, skilful, atheltic and hard working team. Good luck to the players, coaches, teachers and parents.
The first and second year teams will get their chance in competitions after Christmas and training has began in order to be ready and prepared for this challenge.
