Following the Footsteps of History

The study of history is about exploring our past.

Here at Ennistymon CBS we try to explore our living past with historical walks or field trips which take us back in time.

We are very fortunate in Ennistymon located in North Clare to be at the crossroads of so many momentous milestones in all eras of history; from the Stone Age monuments of the Burren to modern Irish historical events.

Our history classes recently commemorated seminal events from the War of Independence including the Centenary of the Rineen Ambush and the subsequent Ennistymon reprisals, including a walking tour of Ennistymon on the centenary. Studying local history out in the field is a great way to acquire both the local, national and international picture.

We have also created a short slideshow with some pictures from our walking tour of Ennistymon along with some period pictures.  The video is set to a rendition of the poem The Ambush in Rineen, recited Mr Gerry Sexton, who recently retired from our school.

The RTE Doc on One series in have produced a documentary on the Burning of Ennistymon, first broadcast in 1985 which you can listen to here
