CBS Christmas Concert 2017

Variety is the Spice of Life

The skies opened, the hailstones came down, but when the curtain opened the talents of the Monastery boys shone.  Yes, you have guessed it, the annual CBS Christmas concert took place on Wednesday the 13th of December in Ennistymon Community Centre.

For the past seven years the show took place on a Friday afternoon, due to the phenomenal success of previous shows, the school decided to put on an evening show for all to enjoy. Despite the bad weather, a packed house was treated to some class music, drama, comedy and dancing.

Clare’s Got Talent runners up The Hazards opened the show with a fabulous rendition of The Killers’ Mr. Brightside’ and The Waterboy’s ‘Fisherman’s Blues’.  Indeed Ronan O Connell lead singer with the Hazards played and sang his heart out all night long. The first years shone with their rendition of Perfect by Ed Sheeran and a melody of Christmas songs. The First Year and CBS trad groups kept the toes tapping all night. Duelling banjos with Evan Flanagan, Eoin Rouine and Niall Hegarty gave the concert a very distinctive sound. We also enjoyed some lovely classical pieces played by Adam Kenny and a poetic salute from Sean Rouine on his six years at the Monastery.

Both modern and traditional dancing were catered for in the form of a half set danced by Eoin and Cillian Rouine partnered by Eva and Aida Kenny. The TYs danced The Cha Cha Slide and treated us to a Tin Whistle recital. Jon O Connell’s Guitar ensemble plucked out a few classy tunes on their guitars.  Invited guest Liam O Brien TG Ceoltóir Óg 2017 made some beautiful sounds. Not to be outdone by the students Rose Anne Healy and Gerry Sexton , from the teaching staff,  got in on the act a treated us to a comedy act entitled’ Celine Dion meets Pavarotti’ The one and only Shane O Loughlin appeared twice on stage with two pieces of drama.

The show was produced by two stalwarts  Marion Aherne and Ann O Brien ably assisted by Emma Jane Browne. Kieran Meehan and Jon O Connell did a superb job on sound and lighting, while MC for the night was in the experienced hands of Gerry Sexton. All in all a great night was had by all. Next stop The London Palladium!
