U19 Basketball 2017

Ennistymon CBS hosted the first round of the U19 playoffs on Wednesday 11th January. After being defeated by Coláiste Éinde of Galway in the regional final, the boys took on St Louis Kiltimagh and Colaiste Pobail Setanta from Dublin with a place in the last 12 in Ireland up for grabs.

The CBS boys started the day very well and were leading St Louis by 20 points at half time 38-18. A spirited comeback from the Mayo men saw the gap cut to 7 points at the beginning of the 4th quarter but the CBS boys quickly rebounded and closed out the game 61-45. The second game of the day saw Setanta scoring a convincing win over St Louis which set up a battle and a half for a place to progress to the next round. In an extremely low scoring game with defence dominating, the CBS lads took an 18-17 lead into half time. The physicality of the game awed the spectators with the CBS boys giving as good as they got from their opponents who undoubtedly had some of the tallest players in Ireland on their team. 1 point separated the teams going into the 4th quarter but this is where Setanta took control of the game to open up an 8 point lead. Try as they might, the CBS boys couldn't close the gap to less than 6 points as they visibly tired. A final score of 42-32 doesn't do the boys justice. While this is the end of the road for this group for this year, with 11 of the squad returning for next year, hopes are high that these lads can progress further next year and bring some silverware to the school.
